Pendant Light Installation Complete Guide

Good lighting can transform a room, but finding that ideal balance between ambiance, budget, and style is often half the battle. The other half? Installation.

We know all about homewares and furniture in Sydney, and pendant lights are ideal for anyone looking to create a comfortable yet stylish, functional space in their home. There are dozens of shapes and sizes available, so it’s no surprise they’re one of Australia’s most popular lighting fixtures. But with professional installation costs averaging around $200-$450, you may be asking: what do I need to know to install a pendant light myself?

In this guide, we’ll be sharing our 15+ years of experience in creating beautiful living spaces to help you understand every key factor of pendant light installation, from start to finish.

What are pendant lights, and why install them?

Pendant lights are ceiling-mounted lights, designed to suspend a single bulb in the air, usually accompanied by a stylish lamp shade. They can be made out of a wide range of materials to suit your space, from glass to paper, metal, rattan, and plastic.

They’re highly regarded for their ability to bring both function and style to the table – or, as the case may be, your ceiling. Pendant lights are also a strong lighting option for any professional environment, with their highly customisable nature allowing for the right design in the right place.

If style and atmosphere are your priorities, pendant light designs are a versatile, showstopping centrepiece choice. Ranging from modern to classic, they can bring an elevated, elegant vibe to your space, or something a little more chic and trendy.

If saving space is your goal, but you don’t want to sacrifice on style with standard down lights, pendant lights are an effective and efficient solution. Whether you’re short on floor space, tired of clutter, or just don’t want to interrupt the flow of your room, the right pendant light can provide both ambience and aesthetic. Plus, many hanging lights are height adjustable, so even the smallest of spaces – like the corner above your bedside table, or your low-ceiling hallway – can shine bright.

Types of pendant lights for different spaces

For most people, the unofficial “first” step of any pendant light installation is arguably the most exciting: choosing your light fixture. While there are typically only three options for hanging your light (cord, chain, or metal rod), with so many lamp designs available, it can be difficult knowing where to start with the rest.

It’s worth knowing that depending on which style you choose, DIY installation may not be an option. If your pendant light weighs more than 2.5kgs or specifies that it must be hardwired, you will need to call a professional.

To help you find the right style for your interior transformation, let’s shed some light on some of the most common types of pendant lights for different spaces:

When to call a professional for pendant light installation

We know that professional installation isn’t an option for everyone. Most electricians charge $200-$450 for new lights, and $120–$300 for replacements, with any number of additional complexity costs.

However, there are times when you should seek professional help, including when:

    • You’re unsure or uncomfortable attempting the necessary electrical work

    • There are existing electrical issues, such as short circuits and tripped breakers

    • Your fixtures contains multiple globes or cables (cluster/multi-light pendants)

There are also times when you’re legally required to hire a professional, such as when:

    • You have a hardwired installation (connecting directly to your home's electrical wiring system)

    • Your installation involves complex wiring or electrical systems

    • You’re modifying or extending existing wiring

    • You’re adding new wall switches for your lights

    • Your pendant light exceeds 2.5kg (or requires heavy-duty ceiling/structural support)

    • You require special Australian-standard permits, modifications, or certifications to existing systems

    Step-by-step pendant light installation guide

As DIY lighting goes, installing a pendant light yourself can be a relatively simple job.

Now that we’ve covered choosing your light, let’s dive into what you can expect from the installation process.

This guide is intended as an overview of the installation process, and you should always consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your pendant light before attempting any DIY work.

    Step 1: Safety and preparation

There are a few crucial preparations you must make to ensure a smooth, safe pendant light installation – all before you lift a single tool.

    • Turn off the power – safety comes first, so switch off the electricity to whichever room you’ll be working in, and confirm you don’t have live wires around your installation site

    • Gather your materials – common equipment necessary for a smooth installation include screwdrivers, pliers, drills, clamps, a hanging bracket, your pendant light, and something to measure height

    • Know your measurements – save time later by measuring the heights and lengths you’re going to be working with, and mark the point on the ceiling where you’re planning to hang your light

    • Remove existing fixtures – if you’re replacing an old light, disconnect any wires and completely remove the fixture (including the base and cord)

    • Check ceiling support – your ceiling needs to be able to hold your new light, so you must confirm you have the right support at the electrical junction before you try to install anything

    Step 2: Assembly

Many pendant lights will come in parts, typically with a mounting bracket, fixture, cord, and shade.

Start by making sure nothing is missing or damaged, and read the manufacturer’s instructions before you try putting your light together. If you need to adjust the length of your chain or cord, now is the time to do it.

Step 3: Installation, mounting, and wiring

Now comes the exciting (yet daunting) part, attaching the pendant light to your ceiling. We recommended grabbing another pair of hands to help with this step!

    • Brackets – create the necessary holes by drilling where you marked the ceiling, then install the light bracket using the appropriate screws (their heads should face you). Test to ensure your bracket installation is firm, even, and flush with the ceiling

    • Wires – double check that the power is off in your working area. You should always attach the ground wire first, and the rest are usually by colour, but we strongly recommend that you follow the specific manufacturer instructions for your light to avoid trouble. When you’re ready, make sure all connections are secure, and all cables are well insulted

    • Securing – observe your light from different angles to ensure it hangs straight, and slowly tighten each screw until every hook, bracket, or component is stable (once this step is complete, it will be difficult to readjust these later)

    Step 4: Adjustment

Once your light is secure, you’re ready to find out if you’ve nailed the right height and angle on the first try. For most people, it can take some adjustment to achieve that dream pendant look, and it’s as easy as changing the length of your cord (or chain) to find the position that works for your space.

Ideal heights can differ depending on your desired look, but general height guidelines for balanced lighting recommend you hang your pendant light:

    • 50–70cm above kitchen benches

    • 70–80cm above dining tables,

    • 40–55cm above bedside furniture

    • At least 180cm from the floor in open spaces

    Step 5: Testing

The moment of truth has arrived. Once everything is secure and in a position you’re happy with, it’s time to install the bulb then turn the power back on. You want to keep an eye out for any flickering or strange noises, and test the light levels from each corner of the room.

If the ambience feels good and nothing is awry, you can attach your shade – congratulations on your new pendant light!

If your light isn’t working, or you want to make some changes to its height or light distribution, turn the power off again and make them now.

    Step 6: Maintenance

To keep your new pendant light in its best condition, routine cleaning and maintenance is essential. The frequency of your upkeep will vary depending on where you have your light – some areas, like the kitchen or bathroom, are more prone to grease and humidity wear than others.

In general, you should aim to clean your lights:

    • Every 2-4 weeks for kitchens

    • Every 4 weeks for bathrooms

    • Every 4–6 weeks for dining rooms

    • Every 1–2 months for living rooms and hallways

If you want to keep your pendant light looking as good as new for as long as possible, make sure to check the best cleaning method for your light’s particular material and finish before you begin.
